Background

Located in Vancouver’s picturesque John Hendry Park, Trout Lake Community Centre is a state-of-the-art, multi-use sports and recreational facility. In 2010, the ice rink served as a figure skating training centre for 150 skaters from 35 countries.

The Viessmann solution

A gas-fired condensing boiler system was installed in two phases – the first during initial construction in 2009 and the second in 2011.

Installation details

The system installed in Phase 1 consisted of three Vitodens 200, WB2A 15-60 wall-mounted condensing boilers, supplemented by waste heat from the ice cooling system. Four Vitodens 200, WB2B-105 wall-mounted condensing boilers and a Vitocontrol-C custom control panel were installed as part of Phase 2 in 2011.

The results

The facility was awarded Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver certification in 2010. It has since been converted to a community rink for recreational use, a process that included a reduction of the rink size from international specifications (100 x 200 feet) to NHL dimensions (85 x 200 feet) and the construction of seating for 250 spectators.
